What to Pack for a Tortola Snorkel and Beach Tour
The night before a tour, one WhatsApp question comes up again and again: what should we bring? The honest answer is less than you think. We already load the SUV with snorkel gear, cold drinks and snacks, so your bag can stay light.
Here's the short list we actually send our guests, plus a few things we've learned from days on the North Shore.
What we already pack for you
On both of our Tortola tours, these come with the day:
Your own private SUV, with pickup and drop-off
Masks, snorkels and fins
Cold drinks and snacks
So there's no need to haul gear from home. The one exception: if you own a mask that already fits your face well, bring it. A mask you trust is one less thing to fiddle with at the water's edge.
The short list for your beach bag
Swimsuit, worn under your clothes. The quieter beaches have basic facilities or none at all, so arriving ready means more time in the water.
A towel each. Hotel or villa towels are fine.
Sunscreen, put on before pickup. A mineral, reef-friendly formula is kinder to the coral you'll be floating over, and putting it on early gives it time to set before you swim.
A hat and sunglasses. The sun off the water is stronger than it feels with the trade wind blowing.
A rash guard or an old long-sleeve shirt. When you snorkel, your back and the backs of your legs face the sun the whole time. That's where first-timers burn.
Water shoes or sandals with a strap. Some entries have rocks or bits of coral rubble near the shore.
A dry bag or zip-top bag for your phone and room key.
A little US cash. The BVI uses the US dollar, and cash is handy if we pass a beach bar or a roadside fruit stand.
Any medicine you need, including motion-sickness tablets if winding roads bother you.
A word about Tortola's hills
Tortola is steep. The lookouts are worth the climb, but the roads up have tight bends and sharp grades. If anyone in your group gets carsick, tell us at pickup. We'll seat them up front and take it gently.
Eat a light breakfast rather than skipping it. An empty stomach on a hill road is no fun, and you'll want energy for swimming later.
Snorkel tips that make the day easier
If you wear glasses, contact lenses under a mask are the simplest fix. If you'd rather not wear contacts, let us know before the day so we can talk through options.
Tell us when you book if anyone is new to snorkeling or a nervous swimmer. We pick our stops for the calmest, clearest water that day, and with a beginner along we'll lean toward shallow, sandy entries where you can stand up and get comfortable before heading out over the reef.

Kids do well with a little prep. Let them try the mask in the bath or pool at your villa the night before. The first breath through a snorkel feels strange, and it's easier to get past that in calm water at home than with waves lapping at you.
What to leave at the villa
Rings and good jewelry. Fingers shrink in cool water and rings slip off. Sand doesn't give them back.
Anything valuable you don't need. You won't want to worry about it while you're out on the reef.
Coolers and big beach umbrellas. Drinks are covered, and we know where the natural shade is.
One beach tree to know: the manchineel
On some Caribbean beaches you'll find the manchineel, a shade tree with small green fruit that looks like a crab apple. The fruit and the milky sap are poisonous, and rain dripping off the leaves can blister skin. Don't eat the fruit, and don't shelter under one in a shower. If there's one near where we stop, we'll point it out.
Which tour fits your group?
If you'd like a half day with an island lookout, a beach swim and a snorkel when the sea is calm, the 4-hour Swim & Explore Tortola Tour is the easy choice.
If snorkeling is the main event, the 6-hour Secret Beaches & Private Snorkel Tour takes you to 2 or 3 quieter spots, such as Smuggler's Cove, Brewers Bay and Cane Garden Bay, chosen for the best water that day.
The packing list is the same for both. Still have a question about what to bring? WhatsApp us at +1 307-381-8011 and one of our guides will answer.
